Elle faisait autrefois partie de la châtellenie de [[Metz le Comte]], ancien château fort qui dominait une assez grande étendue de pays. Elle est située sur une forte colline dominée par des bois, à peu de distance de [[Brèves]], dont elle est séparée par le ruisseau appelé l'[[Armance]], qui vient de [[Neuffontaines]], et tombe dans l'[[Yonne]] au-dessus d'[[Armes]].<br /> <br /> Ce bourg fut un chef-lieu de district pendant la Révolution.
